Sucess... is that it?

Recently I saw yet another career opportunity programme on NDTV where they pointed out the increasing number of Indian students going abroad. Some English lady, with a lipstick redder then Kissan tomato ketchup appeared and said… well it was too difficult to understand since she pronounced every word with a force of at least 1000 newton force and that too at incredibly high wps (words per second). But it sounded something like-
“ Aew…Indian students, they are so nice! I mean they can study something they don’t really like with amazing sincerity just bcoz they are goin’ to get a good job for it!”
in a manner more melodramatic then SRK in Devdas. And I swear on Arnold’s muscles, it did not sound like a compliment!
Its really very unfortunate that we crave for highly technical jobs without any love for technology only for the predictable cash flow that will come to us at the end of the month. They are ready to overlook their likes and dislikes to be a so-called success! But is this what success is?
Now a 17 yr old ranting about what success is would sound more like a 70 yr old granny. So I would definitely not do that. The point I am trying to make is that one cannot be successful if one is not happy doing what he is doing. As simple as that!
But reality is not all that simple. Money if not everything, is something. Of course, it does not matter when you have it but it does matter when you don’t. And this is clearly manifested when you look for the price tag before buying things and think, ‘why does my pass book not share some similarities with that of Bill Gates?’ So guys, I know money is important and that we should try to have more and more of it, but not at any cost! As my Dad says, “Money is to be used and not hoarded and worshipped to such an extent that we loose the ability to look beyond it." I hope I won't have to do something I don't like in the near future.
I think I should stop now. Or at least I shouldn’t be writing this anti-money stuff while listening to “apna sapna money money” on the winamp. On an endnote, don’t expect me to define success or something. SUCCESS is a big word and I think I am too small to try my writing skills on it!

Many are happy when they leave their families to go earn moolah. Also you're generalising here... not all go just for the money. Many want to escape, and studying abroad is a much neater break from home in our society. Men are supposed to stick around in the house controlled by their patriarch dads and grandfathers. Their only means of escape...

Also there are many who do come back after gathering wealth. And those who're just hoarding wealth, well they get their happiness from it...who are we to judge them?

All said and done, I agree with Ketki here.I've seen many people I know clearly not enjoying their life even though they're bringing a fat pay packet. I do hope I don't become one of them.

That's a good post. I know somehow in India the definition of success is connected to the degrees and money we get. I wouldn't think there are many people who would consider taking a break for a year and backpack after they finish the school...

Lolz. I do get your concerns but there seems a bit of generalization.

If you ask me, money is really important. Everything you think of in life starts and ends with money. And to get to your dreams, sometimes you have to go away from family.

Mind it, I only said that you have to go away, didn't say you have to go away for ever.

I for one, go home every few months and could never live away from parents/family. Yes, I do know quite a few friends who likes to be away and never care what is happening back home.

And Ketki, I like your thoughts. You seem to talk lot about family values and appreciate that. I just hope you dont change when you get into big shoes.

Cheers.

This goes much deeper, you know. Its a culture thing,, I guess. Money is always something thats like a fire. You can use it and its very helpful but if you abuse it, its destructive !

at the end of the day.. a person would say himself to be successful.. if he has targetted something and acheived that!... the rest is just a comparison with something else feel low!... but one should know their limits and aim what they can!.. not to look at someone and aim like that!..

Good post ... success , money , degrees etc etc .. one thinks they ll bring happiness ..But only after they acieve them , they realise happiness is within us ..it s a viscious cycle ...
but certainly success, money and education are important for happiness for a common man ..but there has to be a limit

Hey
Could relate to the statements you made. But when you blame people for Brain Drain and them leaving India for greener pastures in UK, US etc you got to ask yourself... are we doing enough justice to the talents present in the country. We only praise our own countrymen for their success only after it has been recognised in the west...
May be times are changing but still there is a long way to go before we wil be able to keep best of talents to our country. Hope that day comes soon....

As far as the question of "enjoying what you do" goes, I have another question.
Is any of us allowed the choice to choose what we like? Its a shame that in our society term success is comparative and it is only decided by the notions that are already set for the term "SUCCESS".
I guess if we have freedom of choice in place we will see a lot less people moving out.

I may sound like a pissed off guy (which sometimes I am) but this is what I really feel and when I read your post, thought should let it out :-))
Sorry for that....

Nice post...I think success is a very subjective term, it not only changes with people but also with time its meaning changes. Down the line one fact is clear that people forget while chasing dollar dreams that money is only means to an end(happiness) not an end in itself and generally things which cannot be nought by money that give us maximum happiness.

Nice stuff...
Money, It's a debatable topic.. different people different views !

You are so right in what you mentioned in your post !! Many people are so caught up with making money that they are not interested in forming a career!! Westerners are different from us in that they do not hesitate to discover themselves, have fun while doing that and then go after what they think they want to do in their life.

I agree with you that though money is something it is not everything. Though leaving your home doesn't really make you happy, but when u r know u r doing it to pursue ur dreams of happiness, to do the job you love, the sorrow becomes easier to bear.
I too have till this moment followed the same principle, and believe me, the satisfaction and happiness at the end of the day is really worth the pains.

Success should be enjoyed in whatever form it comes, cos in this days it takes lot of efforts besides talent and inner ability to succeed among the cut throat competition be it in any field -- school ,college, IITs , IIMs or even the IT sector....

Success is a enigma that comes with a package and once you embrace it , the life changes and then the people see you in the light of the success. And as it is hard fact of this era : You are as good as your last success.
