PLAYING HOST

In India there are only two people who arrive unexpectedly and yet are welcomed. One, the monsoon and two, guests. But distant relatives and long-lost friends I tell you, can beat even the monsoon when it comes to surfacing without slightest warning. But, after accepting the apologies of your dear guests for having arrived uninformed, keeping in mind the great Indian “Atithi devo bhava attitude, you say “ It is such a pleasure to have you here !”

And in no time your well-kempt drawing room starts looking like a railway cloak room with a lot of suit cases & handbags lying all-round. The next terrible thing that can happen to you is the disruption of your time table accompanied by the disruption of your study table if your guests include tiny tots.

Once when I had a three year old guest at my place, she tried her graving skills on my trigonometry text book by drawing birds and fishes around the geometric angles. It took me tons of patience to suppress my desire to slap her left and right and instead say, “Hey you naughty little angle, you made such a beautiful drawing!”

These type of unexpected (and sometimes unwanted ) guests seldom forget to bring their close friends with them since it is the more the merrier. When almost the entire house is a mess, the messiest place is the kitchen where you are busy preparing a ‘khaas farmaish’ by every guest. Your kind guests sometimes do peep in, asking if you need some help followed by a subtle request “I don’t like palak paneer so could you please make alu matar for me?”

As a next task, like a good host, you have to draw them a list of picnic spots and museums in your city . After your dear guests have made the most of your city, the day of their departure arrives.

To sincere thanks your departing guests add with a smile “We have missed the though your deadbeat playing host you have to say, “Oh sure! Please do come! Yeh aap hi ka to ghar hai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

sidenote- If at all my relatives are reading this , commom guys this is for distant people not for you.............

Hey ketki,
Hey u sooo cited the sentiment of most of the youngsters today!
I guess besides the fact that some guests are shameless, its also got to do with out own tolerance level!
Ever since I have started staying alone, tolerance level to even near family has gone low!!
Sad but true!

Oh boy !!! Is that a topic or WHAT !! I've had this little pest come to our home a few years ago and every time he'd dig into the cupboard and take out all the toys throwing everything else around in the process and then tear up books and create a general sense of mania in our house. For a stickler for cleanliness like me, this was hara-kiri !! I've stopped myself short of throwing him out of the balcony by commanding my sheer mental strength.

Oh boy...

And thanks for the comment on my blog. How did you spot my blog btw?

Sometimes, uninvited freinds are good company though I would not be too sure about relatives. Thank god that one can at least choose friends if not relatives.

@sushant,
not every host has this kndda attitude
towards every host!

I personally never liked too many guests visiting my place at the same time, but one thing I have realised is that if at all it happens you hv no option but to bear with them.
I guess it happens with everyone !
Nicely written.

I agree...but the worsts are the one who surface just at the time when your fave serial or programme is about to begin and then you have to get up and help ur mom in preparing some delicacies for them and the ones who come just at the time when you are about to leave for some place all dressed up and in good mood and then they refuse to leave for another 3-4 hrs and ur paln goes into drain.grrrr
