The true india

The True India…………….

15th August, 1947. New Delhi.
The Union jack that emblazoned the star of India, starts its final journey down the flagstaff. It ends the 200 year old ‘British raj’ proclaiming independence to one fifth of the population of the globe. It marks the birth of a new free world- a world of awakening people, of new dreams and aspirations.
Fast forward 59 years......
15th August, 2006. New Delhi.
The tricolour is hoisted. The Indians salute it with zeal and pride. They are actually saluting their oneness, their unity…the true spirit of India! But in the pomp and joy of celebration of the independence day the cries of the sufferers remain unheard.
In the Kashmiri hills…..
The dry wind sweeps the face of a little Kashmiri boy and fills his lambent eyes with tears – the eyes that have witnessed the brutal killing of his entire family. But he wipes away his tears and leaves the blood-strewn floor of his house in a haste lest that the terrorists would kill him too.
In a small Indian village…..
A poor farmer sits watching his water-logged field. The fool has dried away his tears; now he has nothing left to loose but his life. Another suicide. He leaves behind his poor and helpless family to drown in the flood of agony.
In a plush city apartment…..
Another dowry case. A family which boasts of its Indianness and culture attempts to burn alive their daughter-in-law. The poor girl does not scream for justice because has long forgotten the difference between compromise and exploitation. Instead she looks around for poison. The greatest pleasure she can imagine is death!
A remote rural area …..
A little girl, on her way to the river, stops by a school as she blinks away her tears. The school infront of her is so much dream-like, of course school is something she cam only think of!
------------ ( place not mentioned since this is rampant almost everywhere)
The common man, waits helplessly with his face buried in his hands for things to change. The increasing corruption added with his own predicaments have rendered him impotent to fight out the decaying system. Deadbeat with difficulties, he struggles to his feet again and says in a low, tired but firm voice-
“India needs me.
And I will stand for her!”

On a side note many ppl write abt all this, but are we doin' anythin' for them... there are ppl who hv created a separate blog to debate abt these topics... but have they managed to change the scenario...???

hmmm you make a sense in it. Okie i will let you know one more thing - ghandi was not participating in the moment of independence because he didnt felt it was not the righ time to have. though he was dedicated for the freedom.

this i read on august 15th in deccan chronicle - chennai version.

i would recommend every one who speak on independence " freedom at midnight" we all just speak of the royal british army - mount batten the last viciroy and various dharna and death of millions for freedom.

but one should know what mess we were during in 1946-47.

we many dont read the history but speak on kashmir issue, united inid ana everything.

if you had read it - fine -i am hppay

Ketki,
If u r not serious now, no problem, but u have to be serious in future and that time there will be no choice, so better is to make habit of that.

Do the change or be a part of the change.

@ mayz,
i too hope things will change!

@ known stranger,
to be frank i havent read much of history books except for "freedom @ midnight" and i loved that book coz it speaks out the truth.
i too believe could have done things diffrently back in 40s & 50s. but now we cant help it but try to change things in our small ways!

@ chetan
idont think one should quintessentially be too serious abt life.Or atleast i m not that 'sansaar-ki-gambhir-samasyaon-par-vichar-karo' kinda person coz thats not my original self and i hate pretence abt life.
but that does not mean i m always in japing mood there are things u ought to be sreious abt

@ dh@v@l,
thanx 4 da comment!

@ tarun
journalism is the only thing in life i m death serious about!
but in this capricious life i dont have the slightest surity that all my dreams will come true!

@ endeavorme,
thanx 4 the compliment!

That was excellent!! It beautifully potrayed one aspect of "the true India" - though your last sentence made the entire passage exceptional!

I guess you are right when you say that India needs us, but as per me we should leave out any notion of nation states in such issues that are deeproote in the essence of humanity and basic tenets of earthly living. It's not India who needs you, it's humanity that cries out.

Has to be me said...

Brilliant post! I only pray & hope things get better for India & Indians.

Jeevan said...

Nice to see your voice for them! We got freedom form British, but don’t know when we are going to get freedom from terrorist and our country criminal. For farmers the drought and floods are the main problem, so first we have to link all rivers and create a situation of doing agriculture at any time they are possible.

@ archun, @ harish, @sidharth, @ scarletsphinx
thanx! what else do i say?

@ rachit's lair,
true, its humanity which needs us!

@ has to be me,
thanx 4 da comment! :)

@ jeevan,
every indian i guess is waiting for that real freedom!

Probably u have been told this a million times already, but u write amazing well! I am a bit late for this post I guess; its way past Independence day, but ur emphatic statements still hold true to this very day, and probably for ever.

Way 2 go!

You are so right Ketki, for fortunate Indian like us it is day on almanac to feel patriotic, for under-privileged Indians it is just another day to struggle for existence.

Nice post :-)

Coincidence..am doin my PG in Mass Comm n Journalism..It is one of the most interesting fields of work you will ever come across..coz almost everyday you get to meet different kinds of people..with different views..ideas and opinions..I love a good debate and more often than not I find myself in the middle of one..Journalism of Ethics..that's what we are taught..Once I askd my professor if unbiased reporting was possible in India as every newspaper had its own policy..He beat around the bush for sm time but wasnt able to cm up wid an appropriate answer..So I made up my version..Its you, your own self who decides what path to follow..Its rightly said..I chose a different path..and that made all the difference...cheers
